Short answer
Book the free intro or trial class most Utah gyms offer (10 advertise one on their sites), go two or three times a week for the first month, and scale every workout to a load and range you can move well. Ask for the gym’s beginner course if it has one.

What happens in your first class
Paperwork and a chat
A waiver, then a few minutes with a coach about goals, injuries and training history. Be honest about injuries; that is how the coach scales for you.
Warm-up
Ten to fifteen minutes of easy cardio and mobility, then practice of the day’s movements with an empty bar, a PVC pipe or a light kettlebell.
Strength or skill
Many classes have a strength or skill part before the workout: a squat, a press or a gymnastics drill. You will work up to a light, clean weight, not a max.
The WOD
The workout of the day is short and hard, often 8 to 20 minutes. You will do a scaled version: lighter loads, fewer reps, ring rows for pull-ups, box step-ups for jumps. Terms like AMRAP and EMOM are in the glossary.
Cool down and log it
Write down what you did and the loads you used. Next week you will use them to pick your weights.
A first month that works
A simple first month
| Week | Classes | Focus |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | 2 | Learn the air squat, push-up, ring row and deadlift setup. Leave every class feeling like you had a little left. |
| 2 | 2 or 3 | Same scaling as week 1 on the workouts; add a little load only on lifts the coach says look solid. |
| 3 | 3 | Start the gym’s benchmark or skill days. Ask about jump rope and kipping drills. |
| 4 | 3 | Repeat a week 1 workout if your gym allows it and compare the times and loads. |
How scaling works
Every workout has an Rx (as prescribed) version and scaled versions. Scaling changes load, reps, range of motion or the movement itself, so the workout still does its job: a short sprint stays short, a long grind stays long. Good coaches scale you so you finish close to the time the workout intends. If you are much slower than the rest of the class, the scale was too heavy.
Soreness and rest
Expect sore legs after the first few classes; it fades as you keep going. Rest at least one day between your first sessions. Bring water to every class and drink between parts of the workout.
Next: the movements you will see and the words on the whiteboard.
Questions people ask
Is CrossFit safe for beginners?
It can be when you start with a coached intro, scale loads and movements, and tell the coach about injuries. Most injuries come from adding load faster than technique allows, so keep weights light for the first weeks.
How many times a week should a beginner do CrossFit?
Two or three classes a week for the first month, with a rest day between them, is the usual advice. Add a fourth day once you recover between sessions.
Do I need to get in shape before starting CrossFit?
No. Classes are scaled to the person; a beginner might do ring rows and box step-ups while others do pull-ups and box jumps in the same workout.
